The above photo of a cellist playing a solo piece was taken at the rehearsal hall of the Greensboro Symphony, specifically, the Marilyn and Dean Greene Rehearsal Hall. After the Junior League's Bargain Box thrift store relocated to Mill Street, the space at the corner of Friendly Avenue and Elm Street had been empty for nearly a decade. Now, it has been brought back life, adding yet another free, slice-of-culture opportunity to the community. Now, across from Center City Park, it is possible to watch and hear the symphony performing.
According to the history on their website, the roots of the symphony date back to the 1920s when musicians from Woman's College (now UNCG) banded together under the direction of the Dean of Music Henry Fuchs.* However, the rehearsal window is fairly new and we have taken advantage of several musical offerings here. The music is always very enjoyable. If we had one wish for this initiative, it would be for durning a rehearsal, to have signage featuring details of the performer, especially the name of musician(s). On the eve of the Festival of Lights in December, there was music with dancing from the Nutcracker. Perhaps, when the space is schedule to be used, more information is available on their Facebook page so we can make sure to schedule another visit.
Happy last day of June.
