These are the kinds of great things that come to mind when we are exploring downtown Greensboro. A couple of weeks ago, we were walking around downtown near Tanger Center and Bellemeade Street to see the parking deck being torn down. We were struck by the fact that the statue of O. Henry was right beside the parking deck. From this angle, it looks like he is documenting the event. You can see the D.H. Griffin demolition equipment in the background. We're wondering, were he alive today, what would O. Henry write about this event. What kind of surprise ending would he spin?
Many people don't realize the writer O. Henry was born in Greensboro N.C., in 1862, on September 11. There just may be our surprise ending, that, when we took this photo of the demolition, we didn't realize O. Henry was born on September 11, the day the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center were destroyed on September 11, 2001 and that D.H. Griffin would be the very demolition group to clean up the debris. So, there is the link, he stands on Bellemeade, writing about what he is seeing being demolished by the very same company that would help orchestrate clean up on a very serious event that would happen 139 years later, exactly on his birthday.
