We could share a photo a day this month of the Paperhand Puppet Exhibition at GreenHill Gallery at 200 N. Davie Street and still not do the exhibit justice. It will be on display until June 21st. The above photo features one of the installations at the entrance and gives you an idea of the size of these paper and paint works of art. The Paperhand Puppet Intervention opened in 1998 through the hard work and collaboration of Donovan Zimmerman and Jan Burger. Based in Saxapahaw, the troupe performs around North Carolina. Bread and Puppet Theater in Vermont was the inspiration for Paperhand. Both troupes present social commentary , activist, the natural world, and humanity.
Paperhand performs outdoors, always mindful of weather as the puppets could be damaged easily. You must see a performance to understand the scope of the undertaking to perform inside these giant puppets. It can take several people working together to move one puppet. Perhaps you have seen them at the Greensboro Summer Solstice event in June. However, it is also a treat to see them on the wall and simply stand and marvel at every last detail. Learn more about them here.
Happy Monday!
