As we walked around our yard yesterday, we noticed that the seed pods are starting to form on our Japanese maple. We couldn't remember what we called them in childhood. They are formally called samaras, but we called them helicopters and whirlybirds. That was some good, old, pre-Internet fun. While they are forming now, they won't likely fall until late summer or early fall. These papery seed pods hold seeds which we only recently learned are edible. Right now, they are too small, but if we remember, we will try some this fall.
Japanese maples grow well in Greensboro, as long as the soil is well drained and at least slightly acidic. It might be possible to get Japanese maples from the Greensboro Cooperative Extension Center (3309 Burlington Road). It may also be possible to purchase them from the NC Master Gardeners Association. The Greensboro Cooperative Extension Center offers many special events. We have always enjoyed the ones we've attended. To see the calendar of events and their other resources, see HERE. With the cooler weather we've had, you still have time to plant.
Happy Monday!
