Featured today is Sayaka Matsouka, managing editor and writer extraordinaire for Triad City Beat (TCB). For the past decade, she has covered current events and timely topics, making TCB a prime example of investigative community journalism. Sayaka is particularly skilled at crafting compelling ledes that draw readers in. Here is a link to the newspaper, where you can explore the newspaper and find articles by Sayaka.
As with most community newspapers, TCB faces the challenges of rising print costs and meeting budget demands. However, Sayaka assures us that regardless of what the future holds for TCB or for community journalism in general, she will continue to report on local issues and tell the stories that matter to the community.
Sayaka, the daughter of first-generation Japanese immigrants, grew up in Greensboro. She attended Summerfield Elementary, Kernodle Middle, Northwest High School, and UNCG. In her spare time, she enjoys spending time with her husband, practicing yoga, and playing tennis and video games. True to her nature, Sayaka was at a community event the day we captured this photo. Triad City Beat had a table at "Point of Contact," an inauguration-day event focused on community resources held at Scuppernong Books. As the photo shows, Sayaka’s smile radiates, and her passion for community journalism is clear.
