As we were leaving the Choice Showcase for Guilford County the other day, we stepped out and sunset only to be reminded how much we enjoy the Coliseum Complex, located at 1921 West Gate City Boulevard. Not only is there the actual large Coliseum facility, there is the special events center, the field house, the amphitheatre, and more. We especially love the Greensboro Aquatic Center (GAC), which you can see, ahead, in the photo. It is a state-of-the-art facility that does everything from provide lanes for local swim teams to practice to giving group swim lessons to host large, national and international meets.
Since opening in 2011, it has had a significant economic impact on the local community. According to their website, the initial $19 million dollar investment has yielded at least $224 million impact. The GAC has four swimming pools, is open year-round (360 days a year, 15 hours a day*) and is the largest facility of its kind in the United States. Initially, there was some resistance to building it; however, time has proven that it was well worth the investment. If you ever have the opportunity to attend an event there or, even better, have an opportunity to swim there, please do so. It is such an impressive venue.
Happy Saturday!
