This house at 113 Kensington Road always catches our attention when we walk to the Corner Farmers Market. This brick home was built in 1925, has almost 1/2 an acre, a 3-car garage, and four bedrooms and three baths. That is a might big house for 99 years ago in Sunset Hills. It even has a basement, and a walk-in pantry. We're betting that the original owners had help for entertaining in this house.
About the time this house was built, Cone Mills was firmly established in the textile industry. Burlington Industries had opened in 1923. The Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. had been in business for 20 years. Greensboro had many tobacco-related operations in the 1920s. Also, at that time, railways were a primary mode of passenger traffic as well as transporting freight. Being so close to West Market Street, this house would have had easy access to downtown, including street car service. The Sunset Hills neighborhood is now 100 years old. Every home owner of a house from 100 years ago should maintain records of the history of their home's history- since the walls can't talk. The history museum and public records are two great places to find information.
Happy Tuesday!
