We've mentioned the 911 Sculpture Project by Jim Gallucci a couple of times now, so, we thought we'd feature it again. Located in the 500 block of South Elm Street, the sculpture was installed in downtown Greensboro in 1917, replacing the Martin Luther King bust which was relocated in Old Asheboro.
The base of the sculpture has a pentagon shape. Two steel beams from the World Trade Center hold the moveable gate together. The sculpture has fifty sheets of steel, replicating paper fluttering to the ground. In all, 16 tons of steel from the NYC building were used. Gallucci put so much thought into the construction of this work of art, we're convinced he would do the News & Record justice. He would work his magic with pieces of the rubble we've shown you over the past two days. To help you orient, also seen in the above photo is the Christman Company building at 408 South Elm Street.
Happy Wednesday!
