The Yoga Connection is a not-for-profit collaborative community that offer free group yoga classes (and free childcare) to immigrant and refugee women in GUILFORD COUNTY. The goal is to foster well being through an accessible group yoga class. Participants- immigrants and refugee women, volunteers, and teachers- gather to strengthen body, mind, spirit, and social connection. This innovative program, centered around the concept of "seva" (selfless service in Sanskrit) has caught the attention of yoga therapists across the country. The above photo, taken by local photographer Rose Fama Hankins,* features a class in session.
The Yoga Connection offers two 8-week sessions. The first will begin on January 23rd and the second one will begin in September. If you know of someone who would benefit from this very special program, please help them register here, or if you are in the position to donate time or other resources, follow the link to this page. Classes are held Tuesdays from 12:45- 1:45 pm in the Fellowship Hall at Peace Church, 2714 West Market Street. The chance to spend time with other women and practice yoga together is a very special experience for all involved. The Yoga Connection, now 501c3, was started in 2019 by Syrian-American Mona Flynn, a local yoga therapist and exercise physiologist.
