This past Saturday (Veterans Day), the temperature ranged from a low of 45º to a high of 57º. During one of the warmer hours, this bumble bee was working hard to get poles from this coneflower. Bumblebees are active above 40º and on foggy, rainy, and cloudy days. Whereas honeybees like it to be at least 60º and sunny. So, conditions were perfect for bumblebees on Saturday. Still, we only saw one, out of all the coneflowers on Green Street.
These coneflowers on Greene Street still look lovely. Stop by for a visit if you are downtown. This photo was taken across the street from Governmental Plaza, after the Veterans Day Parade. There are so many pods that have gone to seed there. They are just waiting to be planted next year. The color options on Greene are so beautiful- especially this magenta pink. Color is so fleeting in nature this time of year, we take it anywhere we can get it. Do know, however, these vibrant colors are the result of humans creating hybrids by humans pollinating the plants and vegetative propagation. Often, they revert back to their original color.
Happy Thursday!
