Our dog thinks this mushroom in our backyard is alive. In a way, it is. It looks like a brain, and there is such a thing as a brain mushroom. However, based on this photo, a student mycologist told us it looks like a a giant puff ball mushroom- a bit aged and expired. Giant puff ball mushrooms tend to appear late summer and early autumn. It is our understanding that fresh puff balls are edible; however, this looks a lot like a brain mushroom, which is not edible. Plus, this mushroom is definitely past prime. We think we'll leave it and see just how long it sticks around.
There is a resurgence of interest in growing and learning about mushrooms in North Carolina. NC State has a fabulous website about mushrooms if you are interested in learning about them or growing them (see HERE). Also, at the Greensboro Curb Market on Yanceyville Street, there are some fabulous mushrooms available for purchase- everything from blue oyster mushrooms and shiitake. The vendors at the farmers market are very generous with information. Fall is such a fabulous to prepare those earthy dishes, soups and stews with mushrooms and root vegetables.
Happy Friday!
