For students in traditional schools in Guilford County, today is the first day of the 2023-2024 school year. The photo we've chosen for the opening of school is the signage on the Cornwallis Drive side of Irving Park Elementary. As you can see, the school was established in 1923, making this year its centenary anniversary. The main entrance to the school is on the Sunset Drive side of the building, but the back is the main pick up and drop off site and the side with this visible sign with the date. The school is named in honor of the residential development surrounding the school, Irving Park. The "Irving" in the Irving Park neighborhood and school, was the father of Alfred Moore Scales. Mr. Scales, who was the nephew of a North Carolina governor, named the neighborhood for his father, Irving Scales. Mr. Scales owned the land on which the country club, a gold course, and a restricted residential area was located. One hundred years of teaching and learning has taken place at Irving Park Elementary! Here's to a great school year. Hopefully, they will have a big celebration, possibly even a homecoming for former students, teachers, and administrators.
Happy 100th IPES and Happy Monday!
They come back here after Labour Day.
