Mortgage Investment Corporation is located at 1808 Spring Garden Street. We are drawn to the 1808 address because that is the year Greensboro was established. We cannot find documentation for the year the building was built, but learned that for this part of Spring Garden, the buildings date to the mid-1950s. However, since the building is called "Mortgage Investment Corp, Building," we're guessing that this company built the building for the business and the business dates to 1962 (see here). This is a 61 year old business and perhaps a building of that age. Also, the decorative concrete block work on the building was popular during that time period; they afforded privacy, but allowed in light. They are even known as breeze blocks. We're wondering if the brick came from the Old Carolina Brick Co. in Salisbury, NC. Buildings have so much history in them and as the saying goes... "if these walls could talk."
You might not recognize this facade or know about the Mortgage Investment Corp.; however, if you were in Greensboro in the mid-1990s, you likely recall the restaurant at 1808, down below on the basement level: Hayble's Hearth. Hayble's had great home cooked food. It was the closest to eating at your southern grandma's house that you could get at a restaurant. Sundays were packed from opening to closing. Today, that lower level is a hookah lounge. As part of a summer fun quest, we think we're going to driving around Greensboro looking for places with an 1808 address. Here is the first one.
I am oddly reminded of a fire hall.
