Greensboro's Parisian Promenade is a French-themed event, held the first Sunday in June in Tanger Family Bicentennial Garden. It is presented by Greensboro Beautiful and admission is free. We have been attending (most years) since it first began in 2001 and enjoy seeing how event differs each other. This was the first year we noticed anyone dresses in Harajuku street fashion. Harajuku is a conglomeration of eccentric fashion styles originating in Japan in the 1980s. People who sport harajuku build a sense of community around their freedom of expression. Harajuku fashion can vary considerably, with the clothing often being described as cute . Usually there are multiple friends dressed in the same fashion.
At the Parisian Promenade, the above trio was having a great time walking around together. If you follow Harajuku fashion, you will recognize their look as The Lolita Style, inspired by 17th century fashion and the Rococo and Baroque movements. They said they just liked to dress up for fun, and fun they had during the promenade. Watching this trio stroll through the park together felt like seeing something new on a Paris runway. Their clothing made quite a memorable splash. Now, we'll be on the lookout for more Harajuku around Greensboro and at least we'll know what it is when we see it.
Happy Tuesday!
First time I've heard the term.
