The above photo was taken last night at the group bike ride that starts from Cycles de Oro on Tuesday nights at 6:00. The group is slow paced and has some instruction, especially how to cross city intersections and the rules of the road. Last night's route took the group through Irving Park and Kirkwood, and then followed the greenway back to Cycles de Oro. The ride is about an hour long. As you can see in the above photo the greenway along Lawndale and Battleground (behind Target) is not yet paved. However the gravel is fairly compact and, true to most former rail tracks, with subtle changes in elevation. You can now bike from downtown to Summerfield on greenway trails.
Tonight, leaving from Contour at 444 North Elm Street (formerly Wrangler) is the Ride of Silence. The first Ride of Silence was held twenty years ago in Dallas, Texas in 2003. Chris Phelan organized it to commemorate cyclists killed or injured while biking on the road. Cyclists have joined this now-annual event held around the world. It is always the third Wednesday in May, coinciding with National Bike Month. The 2022 Rise of Silence was held in 226 locations in 45 states in 12 countries and on 4 continents. Greensboro police do a nice job of blocking off roads so that riding will be safer as some participants even bring their children. It is quite an impressive sight to see. If you want to register on site, arrive by 6:30 as the ride starts promptly at 7:00. Hope to see you there.
Happy Wednesday!
I have not been on a bike in years. I think certain muscles would protest if I tried to pick it up again!
