Greensboro is known as the Gate City; however, we're also known for some pretty good hamburgers. We even have a square downtown known as Hamburger Square! The above photo is from dinner last night at Hops Burger Bar. The restaurant opened on Spring Garden Street in 2013 and by 2015 had gained national attention when TripAdvisor voted it as America's Best Burger Restaurant. A second location of Hops Burger Bar opened on Lawndale Drive in Irving Park in 2015. One special aspect of Hops is that every Sunday they create a new burger that they only offer for a week. In the 10 years they've been open, that is over 500 different burgers.
As a fun, little self challenge, when we go to Hops, we order the special, regardless of the combination of ingredients. Yesterday ws about the most unique burger we've had to date. Here is the description of it up on the chalk board of "The Southern Fried Burger". It is a battered and fried hamburger , topped with Tabasco marinated tomatoes, bourbon pickles, country gravy, and crumbled applewood bacon on a piece of thick, diced garlic toast. It is served with a side of corn fritters and a spicy maple sauce. (We opted for cole slaw instead of the corn fritters).
We hope you had a great week even if it didn't include a "Southern Fried Burger." It isn't too late, you've got six more days to try one! Happy Monday!
An unusual combination.
