St. Mary's Catholic Church takes up almost a whole city block at the corner of Gorrell Street and Duke Street. The above photo is of the Parrish Center. It was built in 2003 and is located beside main sanctuary. The church sign on Gorrell Street is written in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese, representative of the diversity within. St. Mary's has a very informative history posted online. Thanks to this digital history, we learned that St. Mary's Parish traces its origin in St. Benedict's Parish. An outgrowth of St. Benedict's, St. Mary's was established in 1928 to serve the black residents of southeast Greensboro who had converted to Catholicism.
Starting in the 1970s St. Mary's began serving refugees and immigrants from Africa and Southeast Asia. In the 1990s, many of the Latino immigrants began worshiping there. Today, the congregation is comprised of people from twenty-one countries and, according to their website, from every continent except Australia and Antartica. St. Mary's is committed to helping those in need, many fleeing civil wars in their respective countries. While not a financially wealthy parish, St. Mary's is rich in love and doing God's work.
Happy Sunday!
A beautiful church.
