Cornerstone Baptist Church is located at 1005 North Highway 61, between the fire department and the TA Greensboro Travel Center just north of I-40. It is at the eastern end of Guilford County. According to online records, the church was built in 1908.As you can see above, the church is narrow, but what you can't see is how far back it extends. Here is an aerial view of the property that helps you see the configuration of the buildings. So many churches have additions and extensions as more space is needed, and this church is no exception.
We're used to Baptist churches being purposefully plain, so we were interested to find the statue with the Sacred Heart of Jesus- a crown of thorns encircling his heart. This symbolism is definitely part of the Catholic Church. We're wondering if this church were formerly a Catholic Church. It looked so beautiful as we drove by yesterday when the sun was shining on it. We drove back to capture this photo and help to learn more about the history of the church. In the end, it doesn't matter who put the statue there. We like the idea of provenance and keeping things in place to record the history of a place.
There is a Cornerstone Baptist Church in Greensboro on Inman Road. We're wondering if they are related. So many questions, which keeps this GDP journey so fun. If you have information, please share.
Happy Sunday!
Well composed.
