Today's 8 ft. x 26 ft. dress is a piece of sculpture from the exhibit entitled "Ostensibly So"at the Weatherspoon Art Museum at the corner of Tate and Spring Garden Street on the UNCG campus. The artist, Leslie Dill, fashioned it out of a mannequin, oil paint, oil pastel, fabric, paper, wood, silver and gold leaf. The words and images relate to Dill's concerns: Cruelty and violence, lust, forgiveness, reflection, and transcendence.
Today from 12 noon to 1pm. there will be a free talk at the Weatherspoon about the three dimensional objects in the gallery. The presenters at these events do such a good job at helping even the novice art critic, and sometimes skeptic, understand the artists' goals and intended message. One time, we went into a session asking "Is this art" and by the end, with the explanation, actually fell in love with the piece. If you are looking for something fun, FREE, and a way to stay cool, head over to the Weatherspoon, see the exhibit and hang around for the talk. This is another example of one of Greensboro's great opportunities in the arts. Thursday hours are from 10:00 am to 8:00 pm. So, even if you can't make the talk, you can stop by and see the exhibit on your own. The security guards at the Weatherspoon are so great, they can probably answer some of your questions. When we were there yesterday, Angela actually remembered us from a previous visit and she even took a (Facebook moment, not intended for GDP) picture for us with the above piece of art.
That's a showstopper.
