So often we associate spirituality with a religion, a place, a doctrine, or even a building, However, at the end of the day, spirituality is about the people, what they believe, and their community of practice. The above photo features a few of the people (Janis Antonek, Katja Brown, Mary Bryan-Stewart, Dave Stewart), all from Greensboro, who drove to Winston-Salem to hear RevMariela and to be in her presence. On July 10th, RevMariela delivered a sermon at the Unitarian Universalist Church of Winston-Salem. The smile on her face, the flowing, white cotton dress and the long, blue scarf are characteristic of the distinctive aura she generates.
Mariela, originally from Cuba, came to the United States in the 1995 as a political refugee and lived in Greensboro for 25 years. While in here, she realized she wanted to serve a community of like-minded souls as teacher, minister, and guide. RevMariela has a Master of Divinity from Meadville Lombard Theological School in Chicago. While she lives in Michigan now, from time-to-time she will return to the are to give workshops and deliver sermons. In the meantime, you can find her through social media as RevMariela. Her presentations are humanistic in nature and she focus a lot on helping people heal and develop inner peace. Regardless, of your spiritual beliefs or religion, you are sure to be inspired if you get a chance to hear one of her sermons.
Happy Sunday!
A terrific group shot.
