This photo of yesterday's orange sunset here, here in Greensboro only hints at how lovely the sky actually was. The title of today's post, "Here, Here," is a nod to the book, "There, There," by Tommy Orange. Orange's book was selected to be the "One City; One Book" event in Greensboro this fall. In his book, Orange quotes Gertrude Stein who said, "There is no there, there" in reference to the fact that the Oakland, CA of her childhood had changed so much that everything that used to be there was no longer there. One of Orange's characters likens that quote to exactly what happened to Native people (pp. 38-39). Perhaps here, here is the opposite of there, there.
Orange will come to The Terrace at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex at 7:00 pm on November 18, 2021. There will be many other events related to the One City; One Book event. This News & Record article gives more details about the events and also the book. North Carolina has eight Native tribes; so, the book is especially relevant to our state. Our community is so lucky that the City of Greensboro and the public library system offer us such a rich literary opportunity. You've got about a month to read the book. We got our copy at Scuppernong Books downtown. The library has copies for loan- if they aren't all checked out. We can't wait for Orange to come here to talk about there, there. Hopefully Tommy Orange will have a chance to see some of our bucolic views, like the one above. Happy Thursday!
A beautiful dusk.
