Today's post is of a sculpture that is part of the "History by the Cup" collection. In 2008, eight bronze cups were placed around the city, They commemorate the historic lunch-counter sit-ins that began with the request for a cup of coffee. The above cup is placed in front of the Cultural Arts Center, near the outdoor seating of Café Europa. It is called, "In the Face of Strange Fruit," by the artist Derrick Monk. There is a quote on a plaque below it, by Antoine De Saint-Exupery, "He who is different from me does not impoverish me- he enriches me." That is a nice quote to keep handy and to live by.
Next time you are walking around downtown, or if you are downtown for the North Carolina Folk Festival next weekend, you will likely be near the cups. It can be fun to try to find there. Here is a map to help you if you want a self-guided tour. On the day we first noticed this cup, we were in front of the Cultural Arts Center on Davie Street listening to the Triad Ukulele Club. If you like ukulele music or want to learn to play, learn more about the group here. Exploring our community is so special. From listening to music on a First Friday, we learned about the ukulele club and took time to focus on one of the sculptures we had not stopped to look at before. "History by the Cup" reminds us of the power of one, and the fact that we all have the potential to enrich each other's lives.
Happy Saturday!
That stands out well.
