Today we are sharing a resource that will be useful to teachers, especially in social studies classes. The current exhibit at the Greensboro History Museum is "Pieces of Now". This exhibit, located on the third floor, features the murals of the Black Lives Matter protests of summer 2020, masks that were made for COVID, and community stories and conversations. The murals are painted plywood that was used to cover store windows on Elm Street during the 2020 protests. There are about twenty pieces of street art on display. Accompanying each work of art is a sheet identifying the artist and the storefront where it was created. There are also video interviews with organizers and artists. It is so powerful to hear the voices of the artists and interviewees. See the virtual tour and read about the exhibit HERE. The installation is so well curated. Regardless of your position on the 2020 protests, the exhibit is a window into how many people felt and what was on their minds during COVID and during the protests of 2020. It is contemporary history that is still unfolding.
The online resources for Pieces of Now are especially important, given field trips are off for at least the first 9 weeks of school. Teachers, please look at the resources as you plan your lessons this year. Everyone in the Greensboro community would benefit from visiting not only this temporary exhibit, but also the permanent exhibits at the Greensboro History Museum at 130 Summit Avenue.
Happy Monday; happy knowing our history!
Vivid.
