Artimus Pyle is one of the drummers for the Gary Maverick Band, and he played with them this past Saturday night at Oden Brewing Company on West Gate City Boulevard. His drumming is energetic and his passion comes through as he plays . Artimus also played with the Lynyrd Skynyrd Band and survived the plane crash of 1977 in which three of the band members were killed. In 2006, Artimus and the other Lynyrd Skynyrd band members were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It was pretty special hearing him play in such an intimate venue in Greensboro. The band was originally going to play outdoors, but given the rain on Saturday, the music was moved inside. It was the perfect way to spend a rainy Saturday evening. Oden is a large open space with plenty of room to mingle indoors, outside, and on the porch. Artimus had just celebrated his 73rd birthday two days earlier, which means he has probably been playing drums for a good six decades!
If you like upbeat rock and roll music, get out to hear the Gary Maverick Band. They will be playing this Thursday from 7:00- 10:00 pm at Mac's Speed Shop at 1218 Battleground Avenue. With enough encouragement, we just may be able to get Artemis to sing "Sweet Home Alabama" again.
Happy Monday!
Good portrait!
