Today's photo is the Church Street Parking Deck. In 2008, he entire stairwell was painted by the African American Atelier in their Summer Around the World Youth Program. The artist instructor for the above project was Brittain Peck; the assistant was Delois Bynum; story development was by Rameshkathandi; and, the translator was Carlos J. Morales. The project got support from The City of Greensboro, the Greensboro Library Arts Commission, and UNCGreensboro. The stairwell reads like a bilingual cartoon, but with a serious message. The little slice shown today is the Greensboro Four who started the Sit-Ins at the Woolworth lunch counter in 1960.
While outdoor murals have really trended in Greensboro over the last few years, this one can go unnoticed as it is indoors in a stairwell. On the other hand, it is protected from the elements and should last for a very long time. As co-founder of the Atelier, Representative Alma Adams points out*, the Atelier was established so that African American art can be showcased every day and every month of the year, not just in February. The youth group has continued the tradition of memorable art projects since it was established in 1992. Let's hope they do their fine projects for a very long time.
