Moonrise Over Horse Pen Creek

Happy Halloween pre-eve! Today's photo features the almost-full moon that rose last night over Horse Pen Creek Road. It rose at 6:16 pm at 80º east. In Greensboro tonight, it will rise at the same time tonight and in the same location in the sky. While the North Carolina Department of Health strongly recommends people not participate in door-to-door trick-or -treating, it hasn't been cancelled. Many people are devising creative ways to make it safe: putting candy in baggies; shooting candy down PVC tubes; wearing masks and handing out candy wearing rubber gloves.  If you elect to go out with children, please be safe and honor social distance.

If you are not participating in Halloween, please try to get out and see the full moon. If it is as pretty as last nights 99% full moon, it will be a sight to behold. Plus, it is a blue moon, meaning that it is the second full moon of the month. Today should prove to be a glorious day in Greensboro! Happy Saturday.

Night Shopping... and Reflecting at the Village at North Elm

Last night, North Elm Village at the corner of Pisgah Church Road and North Elm Street was busy and the parking lot was pretty full. Perhaps people were happy to no longer have to hunker down after the winds from Hurricane Zeta passed through. The Village, people were dining and shopping. With Halloween this weekend, a lot of candy was being sold at Harris Teeter. Also, Thursday is senior citizen discount day at HT; that could have had people out shopping. The moon in the eastern sky, as seen above, was close to being full and was shining brightly last night. It looked like another street light in the parking lot.

Many trees fell throughout Greensboro yesterday and, according to WFMY News 2, at 2pm yesterday, there were 39,000 houses without power. If you were one of those homes, we hope your power is back on. We hope you weathered the storm with no damage and are ready to enjoy the weekend, and the full moon on Halloween. The next one won't happen until 2039! 

Farmhouse of Summerfield: 1316 Pleasant Ridge Road

Today's farmhouse is right beside the barn featured yesterday on Greensboro Daily Photo. It is located at 3136 Pleasant Ridge Road. Built in 1918, this 102 year old house has five bedrooms and is approximately 4,000 square feet-- pretty large home for that time period. It is located on a 65-acre parcel of land. It doesn't appear to be currently occupied and may be part of Summerfield Farms. The house is a standout among the mature trees surrounding it. We're betting that a lot of memories were made in that home. The northwestern end of Guilford County has so many interesting homes and buildings. They are easy to miss as we rush from Point A to Point B. As this part of the county changes, it is nice to have these photos for our archives and, hopefully, this house will be around for another century! Happy Thursday!

Barns of Summerfield

This barn is very near where Pleasant Ridge Road intersects with Meadowview Drive. It represents Greensboro and its environs from years gone by. At one time, the county was full of barns for animals, tobacco barns, and other outbuildings that were necessary to keep a farm thriving. Slowly, the parcels of land  with these buildings are being sold off for subdivisions. However, another movement is taking hold in recent years in which young people buy land to farm.

The above barn may actually be part of Summerfield Farms which is a working, thriving, 600 acre farm with the main building just across the road from this barn. The above barn is a lot more humble than "THE" barn at Summerfield farms; however, the above structure holds quite a link to the past. Fall Lewiston

Fall is such an absolutely glorious time in Greensboro, North Carolina. The above photo was taken on Lewiston Road as the sun was low to the horizon. The grasses in the field are partly glowing and partly shaded. The cloudless sky is sporting a waxing gibbous moon and waiting for the full moon in five days, on Halloween. The purple Martin gourd houses are noticeably the whitest feature of the photo. The little abandoned building hiding to the right of the birdhouse post is a weathered gray that almost looks white. 

While the Purple Martins have already headed south for the winter, it would be a perfect time to install a gourd system for them as they return as early as February and sometimes the ground is still frozen. They do like to be around a water source and are one of nature's best bug busters. If you want to learn more about Purple Martin Time in the Carolinas, here is a wonderful place to start. You will even learn about their mass migrations. While you won't see Purple Martins, today should be a sunny day; perfect for taking a little time to go outside and explore nature. 

Fall Fun at Lake Brandt

Lake Brandt is one of three Greensboro Lakes. It is named for Leon Brandt who was mayor of Greensboro at the beginning of the 20th century. At  816-acres, it is the second largest of our municipal reservoirs. It was built in 1925, making it Greensboro's oldest lake.*. If you go there on the weekends, you will see it in full use. Also, the trails around it are lovely this time of year. It is also a lovely place to go bird watching, especially if you can beat the boaters.

Today's photo was taken on Saturday when the weather was absolutely beautiful, the quintessential, fall day.

It's Pumpkin Patch Time at Guilford College UMC

Yesterday, the Pumpkin Patch at the Guilford College United Methodist Church attracted people all day long. The weather was lovely and the selection was plentiful. The Pumpkin Patch is a fundraiser for the youth groups at the church. It was nice to see teens helping at the event and gaining an appreciation for how much work goes into raising money for their group. 

At the Guilford College UMC, the selection is plentiful. The tiny white pumpkins were running out as we were there yesterday, as were the ones with "character"' in other words, the non-traditional pumpkins. However, the traditional orange variety were plentiful- in all sizes. Almost every family with small children took lots of photos. Some families even dressed up so that baby's first, fall pumpkin patch photos would be just perfect.  To be sure, many memories are being made in this pumpkin patch and the youth group is making money. The church is located at the corner of Fleming and Guilford College Road. They are open Monday - Saturday from 10am-7pm and on Sundays from 1-7pm. Stop by if you want to get in the spirit of  the season. Happy Sunday!

People of Greensboro: Todd Olson

If you are downtown this weekend, stop into the Bodega, located on Greene Street, right across the street from the Carolina Theatre. Above, is Todd Olson who co-owns the convenience store with Daniel Leonard. Todd is from Kernersville and Daniel from Colfax. Both men are entrepreneurs, owning multiple businesses around town. However, the opportunity to open the Bodega and serving people going to the theatre, as well as the people staying in the nearby hotels was very appealing to these guys. Todd and Daniel both love working in the hospitality industry and are keenly aware that human interaction is something hard to duplicate in a digital environment.

If you stop in for a quick cup of coffee or snack, you may decide to stay a while and sit on their outdoor patio. You may even find a live plant for your apartment. The Spanish word "bodega" can mean "wine cellar", "grocery store", or "storeroom". Bodegas started becoming popular in New York and New Jersey in the mid 20th century and the owners and managers would become the person on the block who looked out for you, shared local news when you came in, and did a lot to help you feel like they were part of your community- precisely what Todd and Daniel hope to do in their long/skinny Bodega downtown.

A Fall Walk Along Walker Avenue

The above photo was taken on Walker Avenue, in the 1800 block, just west of UNCG. Walker Avenue is a very walkable street that passes through Lindley Park and continues all the way to West Market Street out past Holden Road. Today's  scene exemplifies all of the flowers and planting you see on this well-cared-for street.

From this low angle, the fall flowers are front and center. There are also a lot of "sidewalk gardens" in this part of Greensboro. The homes up on the hill in the background date to 1925.  While in recent years these homes have mainly served as rentals for college students. The homes are in very good condition and any parent would be happy to know their children lived here. Have a great weekend and please get out and enjoy these fall scenes!

Warm Fall Day on Lake Higgins

The above photo was taken at Lake Higgins yesterday. The water was a brilliant blue and the reflections were fabulous. The leaves have been colorful in other years; however, the view is still pretty fabulous. The three Greensboro lakes have nice trails and they are very walkable. For this photo, we were at the juncture on Carlson Dairy Road at the bridge and between two legs of the Bald Eagle Trail. In spite of being such a lovely day, Lake Higgins was very empty. October is a perfect month to take advantage of the nice weather for outdoor sports. It is also a perfect time of the year for taking photos. Here's to an afternoon at the lake!

This 226 acre lake has been an important municipal reservoir since it was constructed in 1956.  If you're heading to Lake Higgins, the marina and launch are located at 4235 Hamburg Mill Road. If you have any questions about use of the lake, their phone number is 336-373-3739. 

Got, Skeletons?

Most neighborhoods have a household that is passionate about holidays. Often, that household has a personal favorite: the Christmas inflatable yard, the Easter yard, even the Fourth of July neighborhood. The above household at 10 Snowgoose Cove at Lake Jeanette is one such house. They are driveway to rooftop crazy about Halloween, with quite a skeleton theme. This mid-1990's home inTurnstone Village, Lake Jeannette's first neighborhood, always goes all out for Halloween. The yard looks amazing by day. We're betting it is awesome by night. We're also betting they will give away good candy for trick-or-treaters. 

Also, notice those beautiful pumpkins and mums, they are selling out quickly. Procrastinate no longer! Last we checked, Fresh Market still had pumpkins, but Mt. Pisgah UMC on Pisgah Church Road had already sold out for the season. As for 10 Snowgoose, they didn't procrastinate!

309 South Tremont Drive

309 South Tremont Drive, across the street from Ebenezer Lutheran Church, is a a glorious old home built in 1925. The doors of the house resemble the hobbit homes in New Zealand. In addition to the doors, the steep roof and the symmetry of the house are noted. The home is known as the Jesse N Allred house. We're not entirely sure who Jesse N. Allred was. Do you know? Possibly, this person was a manager at Ansell's which might have been a clothing store. If you know, we'd love to hear from you. 

It is located very near UNCG, just west of campus in an area on the edge of Lindley Park and Sunset Hills. There has to be an interesting story to this home with some features of the storybook style. Happy Tuesday!

Glorious Fall Foliage

This weekend in Greensboro, the weather was crisp and glorious. The sun was shining and the air had that brisk bite, letting us know that it won't be long before we get our first frost. Yes, it is time to bring houseplants back in when temperatures are dropping to the 40s at night. The above photo features a few leaves from vines and deciduous trees common to Greensboro. They were seen on a basketball goal that had fallen. The leaves at the top are from a sweet gum tree and the ones to the right are from the Virginia creeper vine.

If you are playing the autumn leaf identification game with a friend or loved one, here is a fun poster we found on etsy (not for sale by us or anyone we know). Here is a fun visual from NC State University. Be sure to click through on the top from home to identify to list. It focus on the products of the trees. Regardless, please take advantage of some fall foliage admiring and leaf hunting here in Greensboro. On the bright side, once the deciduous trees lose their leaves, we'll have the evergreens! Opening Day of The Summit, on Highway 68

The Summit has been a portable church meeting at Oak Ridge Elementary School. With a membership of about 1,000, the Summit has long been ready for its own building. Well, today is opening day for this glorious facility on Highway 68. When we were on site yesterday, Pastor Andy and his family drove into the parking lot to introduce themselves (and probably to figure out who was in the lone car in the parking lot on a Saturday. He informed us that, locally,  this is actually the third Summit, with one in Jamestown and one in Kernersville. If you want to attend tomorrow, on opening day, be fore to go online and get an event ticket. They have services at 9:00 and 11:00 am, and likely, both services will be at COVID capacity. You can also watch online. Here is a link to their website. Surely, this homecoming or incoming, will be a glorious event for all involved. All the best to the congregation and staff. "New" is a most exciting and hopeful of times.

Greensboro Votes!

Early voting is upon up. Above is a photo of the early voting station at Bur-Mil Park was taken yesterday. Before the polls opened, the park was an ocean of people and a sea of signs. If you look through the trunks of the trees, you can see part of the line. Once the polls opened at 8am, it took about an hour to get through the line and finish voting. By the time the first wave of voters had finished and people headed to work, lines started shrinking.

Regardless of how we vote, it is our civic duty to vote. Please note, this year, there are no "I voted early" stickers and there is no electronic voting in Greensboro. Bring a pen with black ink or, if you forget, they have pens. Be prepared to bubble in your candidates. The candidates are listed in alphabetical order with political affiliation clearly stated.

I-840 Over Greensboro

Friday is a great day for admiring a beautiful sky view. Today's photo features I-840 over Greensboro. This view northern section of the Urban Loop is from Horse Pen Creek Road on the bridge between Caldwell Academy and Greensboro Montessori. This section of the loop goes under Horse Pen Creek. The green sign on the right announced the Battleground Avenue exit in a mile. Currently, it spans just over 15 miles in Guilford County and it is also known as the Urban Loop. It is changing the landscape significantly; but clearly, getting from Point A to Point B is more convenient and traffic is diverted from more urban areas. Currently, a lot of work is being done in the Lake Jeanette area.

Industries of the Blind

Today's photo features Industries of the Blind at 920 West Gate City Boulevard. It was taken this past week on a rainy day at the southwest corner of the building. 1933 was the first year that a work program was organized in North Carolina for people who are blind or visually impaired. The spirit of the organization is to focus on what their employees can do and ensure that their employees earn a living wage. The organization does contract , manufacturing, packaging, assembly, and distribution of products. Largely, the products are janitorial supplies and pens. Here is the website if you are interested in learning more about the organization. How wonderful that Industries of the Blind has been helping its employees remain financially independent for almost ninety years. The building may look plain and understated, but to many, it feels like home! Happy Thursday!

Dodge Dart, Memorably Orange

The Dodge Dart was marketed in North America from 1960- 1976. It was also produced from 2013-2016. During both of the 1970s, an orange model was available. During the more recent run, it doesn't look like orange was available. Possibly the above car was a special order. At any rate, it is a beauty and in perfect condition. It was purchased from a Dodge dealership in Concord, North Carolina and has North Carolina plates. It is such a unique, show-stopping color, the driver needs to make sure all rules of the road are diligently follow. It wouldn't be easy to get away with anything with a car painted such a distinctive color. "The person in the bright orange car did it." Somehow, we don't think there is any need to worry. The owner of this car works hard to keep it in pristine condition. Even the parking space chosen within the city limits is a space parked from the busy side of the parking lot.

Interestingly, the car does not have a vanity tag. Orange, Orange!, Mandarin would be some good options. There is already an orange car in town with the vanity tag Arancia (orange in Italian). Anaranjado, in Spanish, has too many letters. Orange in Hawaiian is Alani. Now, there's a possibility. Have a great Wednesday and let us know if you spot this sporty orange car darting around town. It is very photogenic. We'd love to meet the owner and see if the personality matches the car.

Carolina Theatre 2020

Having opened in 1927, The Carolina Theatre is billed as Greensboro's original performing arts center. It is as beautiful now, 93 years later, as it was when it opened. Amid the backdrop of the rain this past weekend, the theatre is especially beautiful. The only thing that would make it make it look even more beautiful would be to have it filled with patrons of the performing arts. It isn't entire clear when the theatre will open again; however, to be sure, it majestically sits on Greene Street, waiting patiently for the next performance. Keep the lights on; we'll be back soon!

Corner of South Elm and West McGee

Rainy days can make for very beautiful photos. The above photo was taken at the corner of South Elm Street and West McGee on Saturday night. It was almost evening. Part of South Elm Street was closed to cars so that pedestrians could walk around and eat outside without having cars in the way. Unfortunately, the rain sent people home early. The above photo was taken in front of Little Brother Brewers at 348 South Elm Street. This small brewery bills itself at a boutique brewery. Little Brother has been downtown for about five years now. The owners of the brewers have written a very thorough piece about the people behind the business (see here). The Collie and McCoy families have worked tirelessly to give this establishment a cozy, hometown feel.  On warm days, they open all the windows, put out the benches, and it is as if patrons are outside while being protected from the elements. First Moravian Church

Greensboro has so much religious diversity. On Greensboro Daily Photo, we post something religious or spiritual every Sunday which equates to almost 12 years of Sundays or, over 600. Every week, just when we start to wonder what we can post for Sunday, something pops into mind, or in front of the lens. A couple of weeks ago, we were out getting masks from the tree in Beverly Ramsey's front yard. We noticed a Sunday morning cyclist pedaling into view with the First Moravian Church serving as a lovely backdrop.

The First Moravian Church of Greensboro is located at 304 South Elam Avenue.  This above church building dates to the 1950s; however, the religion dates to the 1,400s. If you are local, you know Old Salem is a Moravian community. In spite of meeting remotely through Zoom during the pandemic, the congregation remains active, especially with food drives and with getting a new organ. They have removed the carpet and refinished the original hardwood floors. Both Old Salem and the First Moravian are approaching the busiest season of the year, the Christmas season. Glorious Fall; Beautiful Foliage

Before you know it, fall foliage will be at its peak in North Carolina, especially in the mountains. The above photo was taken from a parking deck on the corner of Walker Avenue and Kennilworth. The leaves are slipping from green to orange and yellow. When the sun is shining, they look glorious. If you have a chance this weekend, go for a drive and look at how beautiful Greensboro looks this time of the year. With our local fall festivals being cancelled this year, you will have to find a way to make your own good, fall fun.

The other day, we saw a man in his late 90s out walking along his street picking persimmons to eat. He said it had been over 30 years since he'd eaten persimmon pudding, but he so enjoyed eating the fruit. We may get a little rain today, but every change in weather in the fall brings with it many traditions. If it is cold and rainy, it will just be an excuse to get out the sweaters, blankets, and hot chocolate. In the mistime, we think we'll pull up a chair and look out this open window at one of the best views in town! Enjoy your Saturday!

Happy Birthday, Violet

HAPPY 1st BIRTHDAY, VIOLET! We don't know who Violet is, but she is having a birthday, she is turning one, and her family loves her very much. This yard sign is impossible to miss on on West Market Street in Sunset Hills. Violet is too young to read the sign. She is too young to realize that she lives in a beautiful, brick, colonial home, in a very vibrant neighborhood. She is not, however, too young to feel the love of her family. These yard cards are becoming increasingly in Greensboro. 

In Greensboro, we love our birthdays and are known to celebrate them in grand style. Speaking of celebrating, we hope you have a great weekend. Enjoy the beauty of fall. And if you see Violet, please wish her a happy birthday for us!

Ponies and Horses

Seeing a field on ponies or horses on a fall afternoon is a glorious sight to behold! These beautiful animals are a vital part of Guilford County's economy and culture. The above ponies were seen in northwest Guilford County, home to many of the equestrian farms in the area. Within a few miles in the northwest end of the county, you can find fields of horses, ponies, and miniature horses. There are also places to board and ride. According Horse Properties*, the total number of horses in North Carolina is about 256,000, number eight in the USA with respect to horses. Pony ownership is not as accessible.

If you are a horse or pony person, you probably already know of the websites for searching available equestrian properties for sale "Equestrian Properties for Sale in Guilford County and * Horse Properties."  Also, there are plenty of horses for sale and the prices range from a few thousand to $10,000- &12,000, see here.  If you are out, beyond the city limits of Greensboro, keep your eye out. You will have so many opportunities to see these beautiful creatures. Please be mindful not to touch or feed them. They can have very delicate digestive systems and it is important for the owners to know what they have ingested. However, great admiration and respect from the road is encouraged.

The Wright Stuff

Today, we're featuring The Wright Stuff, an Aviation Flight Simulation Center & Gift Shop, located on Highway 150 in Oak Ridge. If the building looks familiar, you may remember that it was formerly a post office, just on the edge of the Oak Ridge Military Academy (ORMA). The center  has flight simulators, allowing guests to experience flying the friendly skies- virtually. The experience is helpful if you are considering a career in aviation; is it also some fun. Rates range from $10- $30 an hour depending on how realistic you want the experience to be. After hours, you can arrange parties (up to 8 participants). Reservations are required. Upon arrival, you receive a briefing of about 10 minutes and then have fun flying for an hour- without actually leaving the ground. The minimum age is ten.

Oh, and if you are looking for the post office in Oak Ridge, it is now located at 8323 Linville Road in Oak Ridge.

American Toad

The above toad was found in our Greensboro garden. He is nice and fat and was actually hanging out with a frog. Unfortunately, they hopped apart, or we could have had our own little "Frog and Toad" Arnold Lobel story. This toad is fat and was enjoying living in with the squash plants. Once the plants were pulled up to plant the cold weather crops, the reptiles hopped over to the bean vines. This looks like it might be a common American toad and Greensboro is well within its range. It could also be a Fowler toad. It is also common in Greensboro.

Toads like leaf matter and burrow to hide from predators. It is so good for the earth to leave leaves on the ground. If at all possible, consider expanding the natural area of your yard and decreasing the manicured lawn. Before you know it, you'll have critters like this handsome toad to hop around and chirp happy sounds. Here is a list of toads ( with photos) you are likely to see in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. Regardless of what it is, this toad is so cute!  Happy Tuesday. 

 

The Bodega on Greene!

Greensboro has a bodega. Is you have grown up in New York City, you quite possibly had your favorite bodega. Bodegas are small grocery stores, often in neighborhoods with lots of Spanish speakers. Kids grow up with the bodega owners looking out for them. Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton Fame) has a new movie, "In the Heights" in which bodega culture is featured. Greensboro's bodega is located on Greene Street, just across from the Carolina Theatre and squarely between the Biltmore Hotel on Washington St. and the Hampton Inn on McGee Street. This idea of the bodega is to have food, snacks, and unanticipated items that people might need before seeing a performance or while staying in a hotel-- aspirin, needle and thread, breath mints- at very reasonable prices.

Todd Olson and Daniel Leonard, both entrepreneurs and owners of other food and drink businesses, opened the Bodega on February 19th, just before COVID hit. They had to close until July, but are open again. They are in the process of opening a sandwich shop inside the bodega. They already have an outdoor seating area, just waiting for performances to get in full swing at the Carolina Theatre so they can fill their seating area with theatre-going guests. They will even dim the lights for those who rush over during intermission so that customers can get back to the performance on time. If you are downtown, stop in and say hello to Todd and Daniel. If they don't have your go-to item, chances are, they'll start stocking it. Just need a quick cup of coffee with a little personal interaction, this long/skinny store is your place on South Greene!

Our Lady of Grace

Slowly, churches have started reopening. The above photo shows a couple of members going in to attend a service at Our Lady of Grace Roman Catholic Church in the Sunset Hills neighborhood of Greensboro. At OLG, there are many options for mass: Saturday at 5pm; Sunday at 7am; 9am; 11 am; 1pm; and 5pm. This church is so beautiful, inside and out. We need to get back inside to get a photo of the West German, Kleuker organ that was installed in the 1970s at the Silver Anniversary of the OLG parish and the Golden Anniversary of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Bryan. It has 2,226 pipes and a lovely sound, especially when the sanctuary is filled with people.

The church itself was founded in 1946 and built in 1952; erected with money donated by Julian Price as a memorial to Ethel Clay Price. Located at the corner of West Market Street and Chapman Street, OLG actually takes up the entire block on the West Market Street side with multiple buildings, a school, and playground. The architecture is described as French Gothic with refined simplicity. The walls are granite. Elm Street at Phase 3

Last night, North Carolina officially entered in Phase 3 with the COVID restrictions. Restrictions have been relaxed and the streets, stores, restaurants, and bars, were busier last night than they have been a long time. Largely, people were still cautious, wearing masks and being mindful of social distance. The lime scooters were being right and left with people cruising through town on them in clusters.

The above photo features South Elm Street at McGee Street yesterday as night was settling in. If you look closely, you can see a TV on upstairs at Natty Greene's Brewing Company downtown. The blue car is a Papa John's Pizza vehicle out on delivery. Even though you don't see people in the photo, they were there. Before we know it, those leaves will change to fall colors and then drop to the ground. For this weekend, they are still bright green and look beautiful against the backdrop of the sapphire blue sky. Golden Hour on Bunch Road

Last weekend, the golden hour of late afternoon was all aglow on Bunch Road between Oak Ridge and Summerfield. Bunch Road and that part of the county  are popular with bicyclists and motorcyclists alike-  especially on their weekend journeys. It was so beautiful, we had to stop and admire the view of this home, hidden high on a hill, with the low sun shining through the trees. Soon, that green and golden glow will be changing to orange, and then brown, as the fall season continues to take hold. 

Last night's moon probably looked spectacular from the above view. Animals and insects were chattering and buzzing. Even they were celebrating the light of the harvest moon. From Pleasant Ridge Road to Oak Ridge Road, the entire length of Bunch Road is about 8 miles. That is a good start to a bike ride if you are looking for some weekend fun. You can also head downtown to celebrate First Friday, now that we're entering Phase 3 of COVID caution. Kathleen Price Bryan YMCA

The Kathleen Price Bryan YMCA has reopened for indoor exercise and members love it. The above photo shows the facility, located on the corner of South Spring and West Market Streets. It was a sunny day yesterday and traffic downtown was light. However, people are cautiously optimistic that they are able to return to working out indoors. The YMCA organization was implemented in Greensboro in 1859 by Julius Gorrell and the "Y" has been enriching the minds and bodies of Greensboro for 161 years.

During COVID, the Y has made an effort to stay connected with members, from providing online exercise to Facebook posts, to some exercise outdoors. So many Y members have built not only their exercise regimen but also their socialization around the Y. It has been a hard six month and slowly and cautiously, members are reestablishing some of their routines. The building is beautiful on the inside and outside, especially on a sunny day.
