This photo was published on Greensboro Daily Photo in 2009, the year we first started publishing. It is one of Greensboro's very sad connections to the September 11th attacks. As you can read on the plaque, Sandra Bradshaw, native of Climax NC, died on United Airlines Flight 93. She worked as a flight attendant and was only 38 when her life ended over Shanksville, Pennsylvania (see here and here). This plaque is placed in front of the First National Bank baseball stadium at Eugene and Bellemeade Street. The September 11th attacks and events were life events; everyone remembers the precise place they were and what they were doing when the attacks were happening.
The Broadway play about the event "Come From Away" was schedule to be performed in the first year of the opening of the Tanger Center. Last year on September, 11th, we featured Katja Brown, who lives and works in Guilford County. Katja was a young mom with two children when the plane she was on was diverted to Gander, Newfoundland on the day of the attacks. Read Katja's compelling experience, here. The other local connection is the fact that D.H. Griffin Wrecking Company of Greensboro worked to clear the debris from the World Trade Center. If "Come From Away" does come to town, it would be very meaningful to have an event where people with close connections to the event share their experiences.
It was one ray of light on a horrible day.
