This is Newlyn Street United Methodist Church, as seen from the Community Gardens on Golden Gate Drive- a block off of State Street. The Community Gardens is such an amazing resource for the community and the UMC looks so lovely from this view. Newlyn St. UMC has beautiful stained glass windows in the sanctuary and a very generous parking lot and mowed lot behind it. They also have a cornerstone which makes dating the church easy. The church was organized in 1921 and rebuilt in 1954. Summer 2006, a west wing was added to the building.
Nathan A. Harris is the minister. In reading the church website (here) you will learn that Rev. Harris has a Doctorate of Jurisprudence and a B.S. in business from Howard University, and a Master of Divinity from Duke University. He has worked at several federal agencies and has even worked in The White House! Greensboro is lucky that he decided to return to Greensboro. But then, if you read a little more, you will learn that his best friend is his father, John H. Harris III. How wonderful to have such a strong bond with family.
We didn't realize until publishing the photo that a young man stepped into the photo at just the right time to be seen between the raised okra beds! As we pause and reflect on the week ahead, let's all make it a goal to continue to build community in Greensboro, whether it is through a house or worship, a community garden, or both!
I like its simplicity.
