Mt. Zion AME Church is located at 1422 Huffine Mill Road. According to their Facebook page, "Mt. Zion AMEC is a Christ-centered, Bible-based, Justice-seeking, and Holy Spirit led global faith community, committed to bring all persons into a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ." We wish they had church history available online, and even more importantly, that they have as much history archived as possible. It is so important for religious communities to document their history and to gather oral histories from their oldest living members. Mt. Zion has very nice cornerstones that provide very important information. The oldest cornerstone is dated August 29th 1909 and states the church was rebuilt in 1924 with Reverend Timberlake, Pastor. The second cornerstone, inlaid beside the first, says "built April 30, 1954 J.R. Cheek, Pastor. Just from the cornerstones, we learned that they have had three buildings and that the congregation dates back 111 years. While nobody will remember all 111 years, we're betting there are members whose memories of their church community go way back!
The day we were doing a photo shoot on Huffine Mill Road was a Saturday and someone was on site mowing the lawn at Mt. Zion and removing weeds that had snuck their way into the parking lot. As you can see from the above photo, the grounds were in tip top shape for Sunday service. Typical of so many churches, short of a drone photo, it is impossible to capture the size of the building and complete details of the property from one street-view photo. If you are looking for an AME church to attend, here is a great one to consider.
Happy Sunday!
Quite distinctive.
