Cornerstones are a permanent, convenient way to know when a church was established. The above cornerstones are on the Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church on Huffine Mill Road. We featured the church, here, earlier in the summer. Cornerstones make it possible to begin to research church history. The cornerstone to the right dates Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church back to Aug. 29, 1909, and explains that it was rebuilt in 1924, and it was led by Rev. Timberlake. The stone on the left says, Mt. Zion A.M.E. Church, built April 30, 1954. with J.R. Cheek, Pastor.
In the pre-internet era, it was a lot harder to trace information, and cornerstones were so helpful. They provide the provenance, the earliest known history of the congregation. It appears that Mt. Zion on Huffine Mill has been meeting and praying together for over 111 years.
Happy Sunday, and if you ever have a chance to influence a new congregation, encourage them to install a cornerstone. Happy Sunday!
We have those in some of our churches too.
