At least once a summer, we like to post a photo of a praying mantis. This one is small; we're thinking it is a male. He has been seen several days behind the blueberry bushes, in the same spot when we water. We haven't seen him since the big rain at the end of last week. Did you know there is such a thing as a Carolina mantis? Read here, if you want to learn about them. We learned from when we posted a mantis photo back in 2010 that the word "mantis" is Greek for "prophet." Also, the praying mantis is a distant relative of the cockroach.
If you are out exploring or looking for that praying mantis, here is a list of the 980 bugs and other insects found in North Carolina. With a little effort, you are bound to find some of these creatures sooner or later. Perhaps you could consider keeping a list of all that you see over the next month. See here. If you do not live in Greensboro, or North Carolina, for that matter, you can search your state at the same site. If you have small children in your life, who knows, you just may have a budding entomologist on your hands!
Quite a critter!
