Yesterday, we featured the giant flag in the Kirkwood neighborhood of Greensboro, the monumental one that hangs above the street on Independence Drive. Today's view is of the main are where neighbors gathered with their children to watch the parade and to celebrate the Fourth of July.
We overheard someone mention they wish their neighborhood did something for the holidays. It is never too late to do something to nurture neighborhood spirt and neighborliness. You could be that person, or couple, like the one in Kirkwood 71 years ago that started the July 4th tradition of having a parade and celebrating the holiday. If you do so, and it carries on, just think 71 years from now is 2091! It helps that Kirkwood happens to have a street named Independence Road. Do any of the street names in your neighborhood fit with a theme? At Lake Brandt, there is the Wild Turkey Mountain Bike Trail. Off of Lees Chapel Road, there is a Valentine Ct. There are several streets with the word "autumn." Even if there is not a street name to inspire a holiday, which one would you claim? National Night Out will be Tuesday, August 4th and actually, the organizers are recommending waiting until October 6th the first Tuesday in October, due to COVID-19. Perhaps your street could rally around that community-building campaign.
A good shot!
