Yesterday, we featured Gayle Hicks Fripp, a Greensboro author and historian. Today we feature books she has written, or (in the case of she Schlosser book) that she has edited. In the books, many topics are addressed and key photos of the city abound. There are photos of early homes; stories of impactful people, businesses and businessmen; information about neighborhoods, and more. The book on the top left, "Faith on the Move" details the history of the West Market Street United Methodist Church. While this is a history of the church, West Market Street UMC is almost as old as Greensboro, and so much of its history is connected to the city in so many ways. As Greensboro grew, so did West Market Street UMC.
If you want to know more about the people and places of Greensboro, the above books are a great place to start. Greensboro was established as a city in 1808 and at one time was quite a textile center and was the crossroads for rail commerce throughout the south. You will learn about these topics in these books. One thing we learned in reading the book on neighborhoods (bottom right), is that in the early 20th century, it was common practice to move houses, as opposed to tearing them down. If you are looking for a little summer reading, most of these books are available, through the local libraries and online. Have a great weekend!
An eclectic mix.
