May 1st is celebrated by some as International Labor Day. By others, it is a spring holiday. Some Greensboro Schools, like Jones Elementary, had a tradition of celebrating May Day for years. The Bennett Belles crowned a May Day Queen. May is the last full month of school and the last full month of spring. As we all remain quarantined in place, this May will be very different from the ones we have experienced in the past.
The above photo features a field full of blackberry bushes in northeast Greensboro.Almost all regions of North Carolina have blackberry bushes, and they are definitely found in Greensboro. They are easy to grow, as long as the soil is well drained. If you are looking to plant this spring, learn about the blackberry from the NC State Extension Service, here. Do be kind and leave some berries for the birds; if only they will leave some for us! If you are home with children today, dance among the brambles or have a little May Day celebration. Start by learning about the holiday, here.
Very pretty.
