Westboro Baptist Church is known for its controversial signs that often incite anger in counter protesters. They came to town last Monday and visited several public spaces near schools. The group was founded by Fred Phelps and they held their first service in 1955. The core members are Phelps' decedents. They get a lot of media attention for their actions.
In Greensboro, community members came out by the hundreds to counter protest and got their points across, yet to our knowledge, nobody was cited for responding inappropriately. Balancing freedom of religion and freedom of speech and believing in the inherent worth and dignity of humans from all walks of life can get complicated.
Happy Sunday. May it be a joyful one.
I'll be honest- if one of these hate mongering nitwits was having a heart attack, I'd be hard pressed to want to help.
