As reported recently in Greensboro's newspaper, the News and Record, 2018 proved to be a very wet year. The 2018 yearly total rainfall for Greensboro was over 64 inches, surpassing the 2003 record of 62.32.* That amounts to over five feet of rain last year! One of the positive sides of the wet year is that many plants bloomed prolifically. The above photo features a camellia bush that is thriving in the heart of the Glenwood neighborhood.
Camellias are known to love the climate in the south. They like water, as long as the soil drains well and they don't get water-logged. Some camellias, like the one above, bloom in winter. It is so delightful to see these evergreen bushes in all of their floral glory at a time of year when much of the landscape is drab. Greensboro is known for its flora, and if you work with a master gardener, one of our local nurseries, or a landscape designer, you can have a visually interesting yard all year long.
Happy First Friday. There will be plenty to do downtown. If you are out this weekend, see how many camellias you can find in bloom.
