Last night, the ever-talented, singer-songwriter Tish Hinojosa sang and spoke at the Nasher Museum on the Duke University campus. Tish performed as part of an event to promote the fall Music and Protest issue of Southern Cultures. This quarterly is published by the UNC Press with the Center for the Studies of the American South. Guest editor, Brendan Greaves introduced Tish and asked questions that lead to her telling stories about her creative process, which lead to stories about her family, life experiences, and activism through music.
While the Nasher is in Durham and not Grensboro, the current volume of Southern Cultures mentions Greensboro and events relevant to our city (the 1979 Greensboro Massacre, and the music of Rhiannon Giddens as two examples). The evening was free and open to the public, and what a treat, well worth the 45 minute drive.
Since today is Day of the Dead, you may want to listen to Tish singing "Hasta los muertos salen a bailar". If you want to hear music that tells of the journey of Tish's parents to the United States, listen here. Finally, if you want a song about a mother's love for her child, listen, here.
Let's hope we can get Tish to return to North Carolina, and lure her to Greensboro next time. Happy Friday, dear readers!
A good portrait shot of her!
