Just when it seems like winter is finally behind us, iris season is almost over in Greensboro. The irises have been blooming beautifully over the last couple of weeks, and now, the are ready to let go of their glorious blooms. Actually Schreiner's Iris Farm in Oregon has mapped out the bloom season, explaining that some varieties bloom early and some late, with a total blooming time at about six weeks. They can start as early as mid-march and last into June. Worldwide, there about 200 species of bearded irises. The are perennials and easy to grow. Iris was the Greek goddess of the rainbow, and the name fits as there are iris blooms of about every color- and size. If you are looking to decrease the amount of grass in your yard, as well as the need to water, yet you want some color, iris plants are a good choice.
The above photo features one variety of bearded iris in a Greensbor yard. If you know of any iris gardens in Greensboro, let us know so we can get out to photograph them. They are very photogenic. Last week, we shared a photo of chard, spinach, and cabbage (it is still growing strong and producing servings of green, leafy vegetables). Perhaps, subconsciously, Wednesday is nature day on Greensboro Daily Photo.
This is a super shot...there's no question as to the subject of the photo which is those gorgeous irises. Isn't spring fun?
