Southside is an area of Greensboro between East Lewis Street and MJK Drive. The above photo was taken one block off of Elm Street at Arlington Street. It is hard to believe that this majestic, mature tree and the magnolia behind it are on that large, undeveloped lot, right downtown. This urban neighborhood has a variety of architecture, from modern townhouses to Queen Anne mansions and bungalows.
The Southside area has been a vibrant community since the 1800's. In 1996, a Greensboro City Council bond package provided for the redevelopment of the neighborhood. Southside has benefitted from this intensive community planning and economic boost to renovate owner-occupied residences. The neighborhood continues to get stronger and expand. While the above photo was taken in the older part, it is still attractive.
That bare tree is going to start looking quite different in a couple of months when it leafs out.
