Barnes and Noble Bookstore dates back to 1873 in Illinois, where Charles M. Barnes opened it out of his home. It is the bookseller with the largest number of retail sites in the United States. According to their website, they operate 720 bookstores, and are in all 50 states. Barnes and Noble offers special literary events, as well as opportunities for schools to have fundraisers and to showcase their performing and visual arts.
While it is always nice to support local, independent booksellers, one would like to think that more bookstores in a community correlates with more readers. As seen in the above photo, Barnes & Noble was pretty busy in the December/January timeframe.
If you are looking for a book to read, The Bright Hour, by Nina Riggs is one that is receiving national attention. Riggs, a Greensboro resident, died last year of breast cancer, just as she finished her memoir. You can find a copy at either Barnes & Noble or Scuppernong. To be sure, it is better to purchase the book locally. And, just think, get it today and you will have something to read if this evening's predicted snow event lands in Greensboro.
Up here the major book store chain is Chapters. From the looks of this shot, the layout is not that different.
