October weekends are great for traveling in North Carolina. Pilot Mountain is only about 45 minutes from Greensboro. This iconic landmark just off U.S. 52 between Winston Salem and Mt. Airy is a fun day trip from Greensboro. It is located in Surry County and is part of the Sauratown Mountains. The elevation is 2,421 feet at its highest point. The Saura Indians called The Knob (above) "Jomeokee" or Great Guide.*
As you can see, the leaves haven't really turned yet, so the next few weekends should still be good for exploring the counties north and west of Guilford County. Pilot Mountain is a great place to hike and picnic, if you are looking for outdoor recreation. The Andy Griffith show called the destination Mt. Pilot. If you head to Mt. Pilot, you might want to make a day of it, head on over to "Mayberry" as Mt. Airy is truly a town steeped in nostalgia. Happy Monday!
