Roundabouts, or traffic circles, are looping junctions that are meant to keep traffic moving. The City of Greensboro is trying out one at the corner of Walker Avenue and South Mendenhall Street, in front of Presbyterian Church of the Covenant. The circular shape only makes it necessary to stop if you need to yield the right away to someone who has entered the circle first. Some roundabouts are fancy, with statues or fountain in the center. The above intersection in Greensboro is rather small and makeshift; if the roundabout stays, chances are, it will not have much in the middle.
The earliest circular junction known is in the English city of Bath and dates to 1768. The modern day roundabouts opened in Germany in 1899. They started becoming common in the 1960s with England having many and France boasting having half of all roundabouts. As for Greensboro, we're not known for them, but they are becoming more common. Can you think of where some of the other are located in the city? Do you like them. Most people seem to have a strong opinion about them- either loving them or avoiding them. What are your thought? Honk if you love roundabouts!
There are a couple of them that I know of here. I don't mind them.
