Today's photo was taken last night at the former lumber yard lot, an open, outdoor area located on the corner of Eugene Street and West Gate City Boulevard. It was a warm summer night and the community came out to eat from food trucks, hang out, and listen to live music. Marty Kotis purchased the three acre site last year and has turned it into a vibrant, family friendly place. Mr. Kotis has the grand vision of bringing a variety of businesses to the property, housing them in existing buildings to maintain the integrity of the space as much as possible. His goal it to develop the property so that it is rated in the top ten slots of Trip Adviser.* Based on last night attendance and feedback, he may well be on his way to making the space a major entertainment destination for Greensboro.
The string of lights leads to the giant exhaust silo that was formerly part of the lumber yard's mill shop. The space is known as "Tracks", a nod to the railroad tracks on the north side of the venue. Kotis hopes to attract millennials, and will keep the space "grittier" than his more polished midtown buildings at Red Cinema and Pig Pounder Brewery. As an example, much of the ground is dust and mulch. Walls are filled with murals that resemble the urban graffiti art at the Wynnwood Walls in Miami.
If you want photos of the artwork, a daytime visit is suggested. If you want to enjoy the vibe of resting after a day of riding rides at the county fair with family and friends, a twilight visit is best.
That sounds like a good concept for the site.
