Part of the reward of preparing Greensboro Daily Photo entries is that we meet many great community members. Six years ago, in 2011, we had the opportunity to spend time with Mr. and Mrs. Peter Vanstory. Sadly, Harriet Funk Vanstory died on Friday, August 4th. Her obituary , in the Greensboro News and Record yesterday, shares some of the personal details of Mrs Vanstory's life.
Mrs. Vanstory was originally from Delaware, but spent the majority of her life in North Carolina. She attended Salem College in Winston-Salem. She earned a Master's degree in French from the University of North Carolina. She taught French, Spanish, and English in the Burlington City and Guilford County Schools for twenty seven years. She was an outstanding teacher, remembered fondly by her students and those who worked with her. Even with working outside the home, Mrs. Vanstory is remembered for supporting, helping, and caring for her immediate and extended family. She was an outstanding organizer and hostess and played a leadership role in many Greensboro organizations. Mrs. Vanstory was one of those women of the last half of the 20th century who found a way to balance the professional, personal, social, and spiritual aspects of life. Mrs. Vanstory, you will be missed. Our thoughts are with your family and friends as they say their final goodbye.
A lovely lady with whom I had the privilege to know and collaborate with many years ago when she was still teaching at Eastern Guilford HS. Elle nous manquera.
