Crepe myrtle is a beautiful tree/shrub and has been especially popular on the suburban lots of Greensboro. There was a time in the 1990s when virtually every new home came with a crepe myrtle bush as part of the landscaping. Many crepe myrtle never reach full height as they get brutally lopped off. The above crepe myrtle has reached tree height, growing well above the roofline on this suburban lot.
As you can see, where there is a crepe myrtle in bloom, there is a mess. Those blooms shower anything and everything in their path. The crinkled, crepe-like flowers keep blooming all summer. In the fall, the tiny leaves take on a showy display of color before they... you guessed it... drop, all over driveways, vehicles, gutters, rooftops and anything else in their path. The blooms of white crepe myrtle resemble snow.
While native to the Indian subcontinent, they sure find themselves at home in Greensboro.
Very pretty! That would never grow here.
