Today, we're sharing two images of the Congregational United Church of Christ, a church located on Radiance Drive, just off of Friendly Center ( just across Benjamin Parkway from Grimsley High School). The above is a print and below is a photo taken yesterday from about the same angle. The photographer's challenge is to capture a photo without all of the distracting street signs at eye level and the phone cables, which are tastefully omitted from the painting, done by W. Simpson in 1993.
The building featured today dates back to June 22, 1952; however, the congregation formed in Greensboro in 1900. Initially, the group met in the Quaker Meeting Space at 115 East Lee Street. The got their own building in 1903, located at the corner of Eugene and Walker Avenue. The sanctuary of the current building was remodeled in 1993, about the time of Simpson's painting. For a reference and to learn more about the church, see here. People who attend the church really like it and seem very satisfied with their minister, the Rev. Julie Peeples.
Quite an impressive church.
