With election time drawing nearer, it can be fun to find out what is happening on college campuses. First, they all seem to have volunteers to get people registered to vote. When Hillary Clinton came to Greensboro, she spoke on the UNCG campus. Whether issues are specifically related to elections or to laws and regulations, election time heightens awareness of having rights and the importance of allowing people to speak their mind. Of course, at public institutions, that comes with some guidelines; the 'where, when, why, how,' aspect of assembling peacefully.
Today, on UNCG's campus, there was a student group getting students to reflect on the issue of free speech. The above giant beach ball was the "FREE SPEECH" beach ball. People could write what they wanted on it. The approach was very effective as everyone wanted to see the giant beach ball. We opted not to sign or to inquire about the petition, because sometimes having adults around, ruins the vibe for young adults. Besides, it is nice to stand back and watch them assembling peacefully and discussing issues important to them. After all, universities are places for examining issues and shaping one's world view. Today's photo makes visible learning, thinking, reflecting, and students taking a stance- democracy at its best.
On a slightly less philosophical note, we're wondering what happened to the beach ball. It looked like it would be a lot of fun to toss!
It's certainly a big beach ball to have around. Interesting concept.
