On Labor Day, when many of us were celebrating a day of rest, the Spears YMCA was taking advantage of a normally-low attendance day to resurface the gym floors. The above worker used this mop and commercial grade wood varnish expertly, gliding back and forth across the dulled surface. Not seen in the photo is the man who was at the edges of the gym making sure that here were no bubbles in the varnish. To the two men who were working on Labor Day, thank you for getting those floors ready for a heavy-use season at the Y. It is easy to forget the people working behind the scenes for us, especially the ones working on holidays.
On any given day, you can see young children playing basketball and volleyball on the Y courts. Daily, the older members are playing pickle ball or participating in an exercise class. There are countless pick-up basketball games, as well as organized teams. If you do not belong to a gym, consider joining one near you; private or non-profit, it doesn't matter- the import part is finding one that meets your personal needs. It is so nice to be part of an exercise community.
On another note, if you want to experience a sense of community tomorrow, head downtown to the National Folk Festival, held in Greensboro for the next three days. The musical talent lineup is amazing. There will be no shortage of (free) things to do in Greensboro this weekend.
They must do this here on the campus gyms as well. The floors always look good.
We've got a folk festival coming up here too.
