(Some of you saw this post yesterday. We are sorry; it posted a day early)....
We love coffee, and public art, and apparently this little robin does, too. This sculpture is located on Greene Street near the Courthouse. There are eight of these sculptures and seven are within easy walking distance of each other. The above cup is listed on the map as #1 (see here). The artist is Rodney Bennett and the inscription reads: “Courage is not the absence of fear, but rather the judgement that something else is more important than fear.“ ~ Ambrose Redmoon. Bennett said he wanted to tell the story of the Greensboro Four, but also the Civil Rights Movement as a whole and equality for all people. That is a powerful message and as relevant today as when it was installed six years ago on the 50th anniversary of Greensboro's Sit-In Movement (Feb. 1, 1060).
If you are out looking for something to do this weekend, you could consider taking the walking tour to see these cups. If you can't go see these great statues, tweet out the suggestion, on behalf of the above robin... corny joke, we know! If you do go, consider taking a damp, soft cloth to erase the evidence that Mr. Robin was there!
I love these cups--so uniquely Greensboro.
