Grimsley High School was the first high school in Greensboro. Formerly Greensboro High School, it was established in 1899. While it has gone through many changes, it continues to be academically strong and to attract a diverse student population both from its attendance zone population as well as the students who come to Grimsley because of the International Baccalaureate Program, the Hebrew Language Program, ROTC, and Spanish Immersion Track. Approximately 1,800 students attend.
This picture was taken on the Westover Terrace side of the main building at what used to be the main entrance. Now, this entrance isn't used very much; most people enter from the side where the parking lot is located. This view reminds us of how desolate a school can seem when students are away on summer vacation. Since 2005, the building has been on the National Register of Historic Places. It can be a challenge to honor the old and keep pace with the new, particularly where wiring and technology are concerned. It sounds like Grimsley is doing a good job on all fronts. We wish the Whirlies, and ALL the students of Guilford County (and beyond), a happy summer break. This is a great time to work, to volunteer, to do community service, to read, to be creative, and to spend time with family and friends. May your summer be everything you want it to be!
The architecture reminds me a bit of a high school here. Not having kids, I have no idea when school ends or begins, though I still saw kids boarding buses this morning. I imagine today or tomorrow must be the last day.
